Course introduction: This course meets the national minimum training standards for Safeguarding Children at Level 1 as set out in “Safeguarding Children and Young people: roles and competences for health care staff.” (Intercollegiate Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health 2014).
Course objectives: By the end of this learning, learners will be able to:

  • Know about child maltreatment in its different forms, including child trafficking, female genital mutilation (FGM), child sexual exploitation (CSE) and radicalisation including prevalence and impact
  • Understand the importance of sharing information (including the consequences of failing to do so)
  • Know what to do if there are concerns about child maltreatment, including local policies and procedures around who to contact, where to obtain further advice and support, and have awareness of the referral process
  • Be aware what to do if they feel that their concerns are not being taken seriously or they experience any other barriers to referring a child / family
Modules:
  • Child maltreatment and its different forms
  • Relevance of domestic abuse, mental physical ill-health and substance misuse
  • What to do if you have concerns and the importance of sharing information
  • Key legislation and guidance and an explanation of the term ‘looked after child’
